As GOP Politicians File Opening Briefs, Ernst Refuses to Oppose Anti-ACA Lawsuit That Threatens to Rip Health Care Away from Iowans

Theresa Greenfield: “I’m once again calling on Senator Ernst to oppose this dangerous lawsuit and end these threats to rip away Iowans’ health care.”

Today, as Republican politicians file opening briefs in their dangerous lawsuit to repeal the Affordable Care Act, U.S. Senate candidate Theresa Greenfield is once again calling out Senator Ernst for refusing to take action to oppose the dangerous anti-ACA lawsuit that threatens to rip health care away from thousands of Iowans.

The Des Moines Register Editorial Board has urged Senator Ernst to call on her political party to withdraw the lawsuit, warning, “we could lose the expansion of Medicaid…We could lose protections for people with preexisting conditions and coverage for young adults under their parents’ health insurance.”

Ernst has voted repeatedly to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would have dismantled Iowa’s Medicaid expansion and gutted protections for hundreds of thousands of Iowans with pre-existing conditions along with maternity care and other critical benefits, and she’s bragged that “I actually have the courage” to tear down the health care protections her constituents depend on.

In addition, Ernst voted for the massive tax giveaway to big corporations and the wealthiest Americans that added $2 trillion to the national debt, and laid the foundation for the anti-ACA lawsuit. Today, the lawsuit moves forward as Republican politicians file opening briefs in their lawsuit that could result in 20 million Americans losing their health care coverage and becoming uninsured during a pandemic.

When asked about the anti-ACA lawsuit, Ernst said, “I’m not saying whether I support it or not.”

“Senator Ernst’s refusal to oppose this dangerous lawsuit is another example of her putting her corporate special interest donors above Iowans. I’ve seen how important Medicaid expansion and protections for pre-existing conditions have been for so many working families in Iowa and community hospitals. I’ll fight to expand quality, affordable health care for all Iowans,” said Theresa Greenfield. “Especially during a pandemic, Iowans need leaders who will protect and strengthen their access to health care – not undermine it. I’m once again calling on Senator Ernst to oppose this dangerous lawsuit and end these threats to rip away Iowans’ health care.”

In addition to postponing in-person events, the Greenfield for Iowa campaign is taking precautions by having all staff work remotely and encouraging social distancing practices at all times.
